Most people only buy a furnace or air conditioner with the house they buy, or when the old one breaks. As a result consumers don’t get much experience hiring HVAC contractors and even less negotiating for the best deal. Heating and cooling contractors know this and use this to their advantage.

Since as home repairs go, replacing the furnace or the air conditioning system is a big cost, and since summer’s warm weather is almost here, we thought we’d share a detailed article from Furnace Compare about how the HVAC market really works and how to choose a heating / cooling contractor.

Additionally there is a second article on how to negotiate for the best deal, because HVAC quotes are extremely difficult to compare, even when the models are the “same”.

Here are some highlights on picking a Heating or Cooling Contractor

(See the article for more the details)

Ask for recommendations.

Find out how long they have been in business.

Check References.

Contact the Better Business Bureau.

Ask how they will determine the correct size of the new furnace.

Make sure you contractor properly licensed.

Find out if you need a permit and if the contractor will get it for you.

How to Negotiate with Heating Contractors

Once you pick a contractor you’ll want to negotiate for the best deal. After all, if you are spending $5000 a saving of just 5% is $250! The problem is that it is often impossible for a home owner to make a fair comparison, between two bids. Furnace compare has just added a new article to help consumers negotiate with their heating contractor.

Their ideas include:

Explaining that you are a referral source friends and colleagues and that when you get a particularly good deal you are extra anxious to share the news.

Negotiating lower prices by being flexible on install date and payment terms.

Negotiating for a year of free service.

Good luck keeping cool this summer, and think about energy efficient units because engery costs are not likely to decline anytime soon.

It is not often that we at Joe Consumer find ourselves as fans of lawyers and businesses, but we’d like to tip our hat to Kurt Denke, CEO of Blue Jeans Cable, for his corporate “Little guy” tenacity. The folks at Monster Cable charged his organization, Blue Jeans Cable, with infringing there intellectual property. The very short summary is that Monster thinks that their Tartan cables look too much like Monster’s cables. How do I say this simply… It is an RCA plug — It has pins on each end and wire in the middle. I am just waiting for them to find a string with cups on each end to be infringing.

It seems like Monsters IP bully tactics were directed at the wrong guy this time. Kurt Denke was q lawyer litigating for insurance companies for 19 years before becoming CEO. He fired back as only a wronged lawyer itching for battle can, in an insanely long, over the top letter that left use crying at its awesome in your face style, mastery of facts and law, and its absurdly long length.

See the whole letter here at gizmodo.

Has anyone else noticed that it’s much harder than it used to be to make healthy choices in restaurants? Not only are portions bigger, they are packed with saturated fat and sodium, and have more add-ons than previously. Appetizers are pressed on customers, and sugary sodas have free refills. How hard is it to eat well when you are eating out?

First, keep in consideration that most active adults should eat approximately 2,000 calories per day, and no more than 20 grams of saturated fat and 1,500 milligrams per day of sodium (depending, of course, upon health conditions). Many restaurants offer entrees that outdo all of these recommendations - in one dish.

Take this example: On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina, with branches all over the United States, offers Double Stacked Club Quesadillas: a combination of a club sandwich and quesadilla, “stacked with fajita chicken, cheese, crumbled bacon, fresh avocado… sour cream… and ranch dressing.” This entree has a total of 1,860 calories, 3,440 milligrams of sodium, and 52 grams of saturated fat! Their Ranchiladas, “fajita steak topped with ranchero sauce and Jack cheese” which come with two cheese enchiladas, Mexican rice, and beans with cheese contain 1,870 calories, 3,810 milligrams of sodium, and 46 grams of saturated fat. If you add a large soda, you’re past the recommended daily allowance of calories for the day in just one meal! Without a dessert or an appetizer!

Uno Chicago Grill outdoes them, however, with an appetizer that tops 2000 calories! Pizza Skins, a combination of pizza crust, mozzarella cheese, mashed potatoes, bacon, cheese, and sour cream, has 2,050 calories! This appetizer - meant to get you ready for your main meal - also includes 3,140 milligrams of sodium and 48 grams of saturated fat. And this comes before the meal!

Burgers have gotten bigger, as well. The Ruby Tuesday Colossal Burger contains 1,940, before you includes the fries or the sauce on the side. It has a total of 141 grams of fat! The same restaurant offers a healthy-sounding dish: Fresh Chicken & Broccoli Pasta. Many people would assume that this dish contains less than the actual 2,060 calories which it does have - without a beverage, garlic toast, or dessert!

Next, take the desserts into consideration. The Cheesecake Factory’s Chris’s Outrageous Chocolate Cake, for example, contains 1,380 calories - in one slice. This one slice also offers 32 teaspoons of sugar and 33 grams of saturated fat. This is more fat and calories than two quarter pounders - just in your dessert. Cold Stone Creamery is not much better. The large sized “Founder’s Favorite” includes 14 ounces of ice cream, brownies, pecans, caramel, and fudge, for a total of 1,740 calories and 48 grams of saturated fat.

In addition to the changes in meals, Americans’ way of thinking about eating has also changed. It’s not enough now to just order an entree and a beverage. Now people tend to order beverages that have unlimited refills, appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts. While the portion sizes go up, we continue to clean our plates - because who wants to waste food?

So what can we do to stay healthy in the midst of the calorie explosion? Start by being aware. Just knowing that you have to watch out for yourself in a restaurant is a good start. Check out what exactly restaurants have to offer at sites like HealthyDiningFinder.com. Don’t be afraid to ask your server if you can have a certain item prepared light, or grilled. Ask for sauces on the side so that you can control the amount that you put on the food, and substitute vegetables for fries when possible.

One very simple, but often overlooked, way to reduce the amount of calories you take in when eating out is to drink water or unsweetened iced tea. Sodas and alcoholic drinks are packed with calories, and many people drink more than one serving with a meal.

Think about sharing - share a dessert or appetizer instead of getting one for yourself. If no one wants to share, take the rest of your meal home! You’ve just gotten lunch and dinner for the price of one meal, and you’re saving your health!

A new site offers some obvious functionality that Amazon was missing, a way to search for only things with free shipping. I am an Amazon Prime member ($79 / year for unlimited free 2 day shipping on orders of any size). This is great because I am not tempted to by $25 worth of stuff for the Free Super Saver shipping, and because I am impatient and I don’t like to wait for the slower shipping. But mainly I love Amazon because they have GREAT customer service. Things come when they are supposed to come, as promised and while rarely necessary returns are easy.

What does drive me a little nuts is that there is no way to limit my search to Amazon for just the items with free shipping. Well now there is!
The New Site Free Shipping On… gives you any easy way to only find items eligible of free shipping (either free super saver or amazon prime). You can search right from the site, but the best part is an open search extension, that let’s you search right from the browser. It should work pretty much the same way on Internet Explorer or Firefox, on a PC or Mac, but here are some instructions (with screen shots from firefox on a mac):

Just click the link that says “Add this to your browser”

Say OK to add it to the list of engines:

And you are all set to search…

Freeshippingon.com has the same functionality to search for eBay items with free shipping and a list of free shipping coupons for 500 more stores! The site is very easy to use, even if the name is hard to remember.

Did you buy Airborne Cold Supplement to prevent a cold? Because of to some reporting by ABC, know that there was no “clinical study” or any proof that it works at all. Thanks to a class action lawsuit you can now get a refund for your past purchases if you have the receipt (yeah right!)

If you don’t have a receipt, you can still get a refund on up to six products. So if you can’t keep your body healthy, at least keep your wallet healthy.

Consumer’s shopping habits have been put under a microscope and analyzed by the retail industry in order to maximize sales.

Shoppers have been as thoroughly studied as lab rats and the research has resulted in scientifically proven approaches to influence shopper’s emotions, to heighten their insecurities and to trick them in to buying things they don’t need or want.Joe Consumer has put together 10 of the most common retail tricks, along with tips for how to avoid being taken in. While some of these things may seem like common sense, each is a reaction to a specific tactic retailers use to get you to buy just one more thing.

My, that’s a big basket you’ve got there

Stores have hundreds of enormous shopping carts parked conveniently at the entrance. Once you have selected something, you’re more likely to “find” additional items - after all, that empty space in the cart is just begging to be filled, you must have something else you can buy, right?

Tip: If you can skip the cart and make do with a basket, you’ll reduce the temptation to over buy. If you can get by without the basket, even better!

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

Vanity mirrors slow you down and keep you looking, but there is more than meets the eye. Most people can’t help but check themselves out, and who’s 100% satisfied with what they see? Making you more self-conscious helps you see new items as a solution. You are more likely to buy, when you’ve walked out of the house in something less flattering than what’s on the rack in front of you.

Tip: Wear something that looks good on you while you shop, and avoid mirrors unless you’re already trying something on. Not only will you feel more confident and buy less, you’ll generally get better service too.

Buy in bulk and save?

Misleading bulk sales are another retail favorite. There’s no difference between $5 each and the four for $20 on sale, except that you just might end up with three more than you wanted. Also, products sold in different volumes and weights often have prices that are chosen to confuse you. Shoppers tend to look at $10.49 for 48 ounces and think it’s the equivalent of $4.99 for 24 ounces even though it’s not -you’re paying more for less! Most grocery stores and pharmacies are required to provide per unit pricing signage, but these often don’t reflect sale prices.

Even when it is actually cheaper per unit to buy in bulk, it doesn’t mean you should! Do you really need a gallon of mayonnaise, or 1000 clothes hangers?

Tip: Compare unit prices, use that calculator on your cell phone, and don’t buy more than you can use, no matter the “savings”.

How did they stack all those boxes like that?

Those towering displays of intricately stacked boxes are called power displays, and they are meant to be speed bumps to slow you down and distract you from finding what you came for. Stores like Ikea have taken this to a whole new level. Their layout is specifically designed to require every shopper at least momentary exposure to every major showroom and floor, which increases the chance that you’ll come out with more than what you came in for.

Tip: Look for shortcut signs to areas of choice & beeline to the checkout.

To get to the cheese, you have to get through the maze

Milk, bread, restrooms — all the essentials — are all in the back of the store, because they’re staples that everyone needs, and relatively low margin. Putting them there forces you to check out other merchandise along the way. Getting them first can help you stick to your list.

Tip: Beeline to the back and work your way forward.

Bargain bins and going-out-of business sales

We all love feeling like we got a good deal, but don’t be fooled! While some stores pay their clerks to be obsessive about precisely-folded sweaters on display, others actually pay them to make sure the displays are just a bit little messy, because shoppers interpret that (often unconsciously) as a cue that other people thought it was a deal too. Others retailers are known to have annual moving sales, year end sales and re-opening sales that just amount to taking their leftovers off hangers and dumping them into clearance bins.

Tip: Evaluate the value of a “bargain” objectively, not by how wrinkled it is.

Oooh, something smells amazing!

Stores and restaurants love to stimulate your appetite with provocative sights and smells. Grocery stores capitalize on hungry consumers by offering free samples, but this isn’t charity any more than the smell of freshly baked bread is an accident. These are signals to excite you and tempt you into buying foods that are likely no better for your financial health than your physical health.

Tip: Eat before you shop, or if you’re out shopping for the day, pack a water bottle and a snack!

Save even more with our charge card!

There’s a reason why department stores so cheerfully help you afford that overpriced indulgence with a discount on with a store charge card - they make the money later. You’re much more likely to buy big impulse items if you don’t have to count the dollars out the wallet you are holding.

Tip: Pay in cash. Going to the ATM and physically seeing your bank balance gives you that extra time to consider.

Retailers love to put children to work “helping” you find things

Manufacturers advertise to children aggressively, so kids are primed to seek out products they have been exposed too. Stores know that catching a kid’s attention is a great way to get distracted parents to fork over cash for an impulse buy, and they purposefully put colorful, fun, shiny items within their reach.

Tip: Try to leave the kids at home, or have someone watch them. People tend to shop more efficiently without partners and friends, too.

Checking out? One last thing…

Drinks, candy, gum, media – all right by the checkout counter. This section is convenient in part because it is compact and limited, but it also means you can’t compare prices, and may not get your favorite brand.

Tip: Ask yourself if you actually need it, or if it’s worth your place in line to compare prices.

Thanks to Boing Boing for sharing this creative work from The Billboard Liberation Front, and please note that the BLF have a strict policy of not damaging the underlying billboard permanently!

So far the house has refused to grant amnesty to the companies that illegally spied on Americans. If you care about privacy, keep up the pressure and don’t let the government grant amnesty to the telcos that knowingly eavesdropped on US Citzens without warren ts. Learn more at the EFF’s NSA Spying page, because privacy is too important to give up without a fight.
